Why Is My Air Filter Getting Clogged With Oil on My Lawn Mower?

If you find that your air filter is often clogged with oil and other dirt, the most likely cause is to perform maintenance on the mower when you use incorrect procedures. Be sure to allow the engine to cool down and remove the spark plug wires before performing any operation on the mower to prevent accidental start of the mower, which may be dangerous.

Oily Filter Dangers

Oily air filters prevent lawn mowers from functioning normally. They trap dust and dirt as well as mowing particles, which can enter the engine if the filter is dirty enough. The purpose of an air filter is to let air into the engine so that it can mix with gasoline and burn, but it does not work if it allows dust to enter or does not provide sufficient air passages.

Incorrect Maintenance Procedures

An air filter is always clogged with oil, which is most likely the result of steering the mower in the wrong direction when you operate the blades under the mower platform. If you turn over the mower with the air filter closed, oil will leak out and enter the filter, blocking the filter. However, as time goes by, the air filter does become oily, so if this is not a continuous problem, it is likely that your filter will need to be replaced.

Dirty Filter Cleaning

Generally, the air filter needs to be replaced once a quarter or after 25 hours of use of the mower. If your air filter is made of paper, please replace it. If it is made of foam, it can be washed with hot water and detergent and then wrung out. Before reinserting the air filter, saturate it with oil and wring it dry with a cloth. Although this last step may seem counterintuitive, the air filter should actually be oily, but not clogged with oil.

Filter Clog Prevention

To prevent future plugging of the air filter, be sure to turn the mower air filter upside down. If you do not remember this step or need more freedom of movement when working on a lawn mower, the best bet is to run the machine on petrol and then remove the engine oil using a siphon. If your lawnmower is operating less efficiently than usual, check the filter: you may have an accumulation of oil before recommending the filter replacement time. Targeted maintenance can prevent bigger problems.
